Use discovering for an ongoing action or for the activity itself. Contrast it with inventing, which means creating something new rather than finding what was already there.

ラテン語 discooperire（dis-「除去」+ cooperire「覆う」）が古フランス語 descovrir を経て英語に。「覆いを取り除く」が原義で、隠れていたものを見つけ出す意味に。関連語: cover（覆う）、recover（回復する＝再び覆う→取り戻す）。
Discovering is formed by adding -ing to discover. Discover came through Old French descovrir from a Latin formation based on dis-, expressing removal or reversal, and cooperire, “to cover completely.” Its literal historical image is removing a covering. The meaning consequently developed from exposing something hidden to finding or becoming aware of something previously unknown. The familiar word cover remains a useful link to this development.
