パラシュート
解説 Definition
人や物資を高い場所から安全に地上へ届けるために、空中で開いて空気抵抗を受け、下降を遅くする布製の傘状の装置のこと。一般に飛行機や高い場所から投下する際に使われ、あらかじめ収納された布を瞬時に展開して働く。降下する際の速度を抑えることで着地の衝撃やけがを防ぐことができる。

フランス語 parachute は para-「防ぐ」と chute「落下」の結合。つまり「落下を防ぐもの」で、仕組みそのものが語義になっている。parasol も同じ para- を持ち、chute と見比べると意味がすっと読める。
