A Walloon is a French-speaking person from the southern part of Belgium. The word can also mean the regional Romance language spoken there. It is mainly used in discussions of Belgian people, language, and culture.

walloonはフランス語 Wallon から入り、中世ラテン語 Wallo、さらにゲルマン祖語 *Walhaz「異民族・ローマ化された人」へさかのぼる。ゲルマン人が自分たちと違うラテン語系住民を呼んだ名が、ベルギー南部のワロン人・ワロン語の名になった。関連語に Welsh, walnut がある。
Walloon came into English from French Wallon. It goes back to a Germanic root, reconstructed as *Walhaz, used for foreign or Romance-speaking people. That name was later applied to the French-speaking people of southern Belgium; English words like Welsh and walnut come from the same old root.
