Width is the measurement of how wide something is from one side to the other. It is used when describing the size of objects, spaces, roads, screens, and many other things. Width is different from length and height.

width は古英語系の wide を土台に、性質を名詞にする接尾辞 -th が付いてできた語で、古い中英語の wide に代わって定着しました。widen や widespread と同じ語根で、「広いこと」がそのまま物の横のひろがり、つまり「幅」になった語です。
Width was formed from wide with the noun suffix -th, which makes words for a quality or state. It replaced older Middle English forms and became the standard noun for "being wide." The meaning then narrowed to the side-to-side measure of something. Related words include widen and widespread.
