「British」は Britain に語尾 -ish「…に属する」が付いた語で、Britain はラテン語 Britannia、さらにケルト系の島名にさかのぼります。Brittany も近い仲間で、British が「ブリテンの人」という形だと見えると、国名と人名のつながりが納得できます。
British is formed from Britain plus the suffix -ish, meaning "belonging to" or "connected with." Britain comes through Latin Britannia and goes back to an older Celtic name for the island. So British originally meant simply "of Britain" or "from Britain." A related name is Brittany.
