Memory Tip
France is in the EU.
Expand EU into European Union: European identifies the region, and union tells you that countries have joined in an organized group. Unlike Europe, which is a continent and broad geographical region, the EU is an institution with member countries. Use the article in normal sentences: “France is in the EU.” Useful combinations include EU member, EU country, EU law, and EU policy. Keeping “place” for Europe and “organization” for the EU provides a reliable memory distinction.

EU is the initialism of European Union, formed from the first letters of European and Union. European derives from Europe, while union ultimately comes from Latin unio, referring to unity or the joining of separate parts.
