解説 Definition
理由や目的をたずねる疑問語で、「なぜ」「どうして」に当たる。相手の行動、判断、状態の原因を聞くときに使い、答えでは because や to 不定詞が続くことが多い。単独で Why? と言うと、単なる質問だけでなく驚きや反発の響きも出せる。

古英語 hwȳ / hwi に由来し、もともとは「どんな理由で」「何によって」を表した語。what と同じ疑問語の語根を共有し、wh-語群の中で特に理由や原因を問う働きへ発達した。
From Old English hwȳ or hwi, originally meaning "for what reason" or "by what cause." It shares its root with what and belongs to the same old wh- family. Over time, it became the standard English word for asking about reasons and causes.
