覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
「Europe」は地域・大陸名の「ヨーロッパ」で、大文字で始め、通常は冠詞を付けません。live in Europe、travel around Europeの形を場面ごと覚えましょう。Europeanは「ヨーロッパの・ヨーロッパ人」、EUはヨーロッパの一部の国々による組織であり、Europeそのものとは異なります。
Learn Europe as the name of a continent or broad region, written with a capital E and normally without an article. Attach it to useful patterns such as “live in Europe” and “travel around Europe.” Pair it with European, the adjective and noun for people or things connected with Europe. Do not treat Europe and the EU as interchangeable: Europe is a geographical and cultural region, whereas the European Union is an organization whose membership does not include every European country.

Europe の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語のEuropaを経て、古代ギリシャ語のEurōpēに由来します。Eurōpēはギリシャ神話に登場する女性の名でもあります。
English Europe came through Latin Europa from ancient Greek Eurōpē. In Greek tradition, Eurōpē was also the name of a mythological woman, and the name became associated with a geographical region. The deeper origin and original meaning of the name are uncertain, so proposed explanations remain disputed. Its geographical scope developed over centuries before becoming the modern proper name for the continent and region.
