フランス語 absinthe を経て、ラテン語 absinthium、さらにギリシャ語 apsinthion にさかのぼる語で、もとは薬草ニガヨモギの名です。英語 absinth も同系で、酒名が原料植物名そのものなので「苦い薬草の酒」と納得できます。
English absinthe was borrowed from French absinthe. The French word continues Latin absinthium, which came from Greek apsinthion, the name of wormwood. Because wormwood was a defining botanical ingredient, the plant’s name became the name of the alcoholic drink flavored with it. The less common English spelling absinth belongs to the same history. The word’s development therefore runs from the bitter herb to the distinctive herbal spirit made with that herb.
