wormwood は現代英語では worm+wood に見えますが、実際は古英語 wermod 由来で、もともと透明な複合語ではありません。苦い薬草として知られ、同系語のドイツ語 Wermut から vermouth も生まれたと知ると、香味と薬効の歴史が見えてきます。
