improvise は、きちんと prepare してから行うのでなく、その場で形にする動きとして覚えると残りやすい語です。compose が時間をかけて作る感じなら、improvise は「走りながら作る」。ジャズの即興演奏だけでなく、improvise a speech（即席で話す）、improvise with available materials（手元の物で間に合わせる）のように、演奏・会話・応急対応まで広く使えます。improv comedy という定番表現も一緒に覚えると定着しやすいです。
