rehearse の語源・成り立ち Etymology
rehearseは古フランス語rehercier由来で、re-「再び」+ herce「熊手」。土を何度もならすイメージから、内容を繰り返して整える意味になった。hearseやharrowも同じく「かきならす」感覚につながる語。
"Rehearse" comes through Old French rehercier. It is thought to contain re- meaning "again" and a word linked to a rake or harrow, giving the image of going over ground repeatedly to smooth it. That idea of working something over again developed into repeating words or actions until they are ready. It is distantly related in sense to hearse and harrow.
