apertureはラテン語apertura「開口部」が語源で、aperire「開ける・覆いを取る」から来た。ap-「離して」+「覆う」に関わる語根を含み、“覆いが外れてできた開き”という感覚が、レンズの絞りの意味につながる。関連語はaperitif, overture。
Aperture comes from Latin apertura, from aperire, meaning "to open" or "uncover." The original idea was an opening made when something covering it is removed. That sense later became the technical meaning of an opening in a lens or camera.
