alas の語源・成り立ち Etymology

alas は古フランス語 alas に由来し、a「 ah! 」+ las「疲れ果てた・哀れな」から成る嘆きの語です。ラテン語 lassus「疲れた」にさかのぼり、「ああ、つらい」という感情がそのまま「ああ、悲しい」の意味になりました。関連語は lassitude, weary。

Alas entered English from Old French alas, an exclamation of sorrow or distress. It is traditionally analyzed as a combination of a, an exclamatory sound comparable to “ah,” and las, meaning weary, wretched, or unfortunate. Las is connected with Latin lassus, meaning tired or weary. The expression therefore developed naturally as a conventional cry of grief, regret, or pity.
