adjective

アマゾンの

解説 Definition

Amazonian は、アマゾン川や南米のアマゾン地域に関係するという意味です。地名 Amazon に由来する形容詞で、自然・森林・文化などを説明するときに使われます。

Amazonian means relating to the Amazon River, the Amazon Basin, or the peoples, wildlife, environments, and cultures of that South American region. It commonly modifies nouns such as forest, species, community, and ecosystem.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

地名由来の形容詞なので通常は Amazonian と大文字で書く。Amazon に形容詞語尾 -ian が付き、「アマゾン川・地域に関する」を表す。Amazonian forests、Amazonian fish、Amazonian cultures の組み合わせで覚える。企業名 Amazon に関する場合は通常 Amazonian とは言わず、Amazon employee や Amazon service とする点にも注意する。

See Amazonian as Amazon plus the adjective ending -ian, meaning “connected with the Amazon.” Picture the river basin and use strong combinations such as Amazonian forest, Amazonian fish, Amazonian wildlife, and Amazonian cultures. The capital A signals its origin in a geographical proper name. Keep the regional adjective separate from references to the modern company: English normally says an Amazon employee or an Amazon service, not an Amazonian employee. The ending -ian works much as it does in Brazilian or Canadian, turning a place-related name into an adjective.

amazonian の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ギリシャ神話の女戦士族 Amazones に由来。語源は諸説あり、ギリシャ語 a-(無)+mazos(乳房)で「弓を引くため片乳を切除した」という民間語源が有名。南米アマゾン川はスペイン人探検家が女戦士に遭遇したとの伝説から命名。関連語 Amazon(企業名も同神話由来)。

Amazonian is formed from Amazon and the adjective suffix -ian. The Amazon River was named by the Spanish explorer Francisco de Orellana, whose account compared female warriors encountered during his expedition with the Amazons of Greek mythology. Greek Amazónes was the name of a legendary nation of warrior women. Its deeper origin is uncertain; the familiar explanation from Greek a- and mazos, supposedly “without a breast,” is generally treated as an ancient folk etymology rather than a secure derivation.
