忌み嫌うものとは、宗教的あるいは道徳的に非難されていて避けられるべき人やもの、あるいは概念を指す。非常に強い嫌悪を持って扱われる存在だ。
An anathema is something that someone strongly hates or completely rejects. It can also mean a person or idea that is seen as unacceptable by a group. The word is formal and often used for very strong opposition.

anathema の語源・成り立ち Etymology
anathema はギリシャ語 anathema に由来し、ana-「上へ」+ tithenai「置く」から成り、原義は「神前に供えて置くもの」だった。そこから「神のために取り分ける」が「呪われたものとして切り離す」へ転じ、今の「忌み嫌われるもの」になった。関連語は thesis、hypothesis。
Anathema comes from Greek anathema, from ana- meaning "up" and a verb meaning "to place." It originally meant something set up or dedicated, especially as an offering to a god. Later the idea changed to something set apart in a negative way, and from there it came to mean something cursed or deeply hated.
