Amitabha is a major Buddha in Mahayana Buddhism, especially central to Pure Land traditions. He presides over the Western Pure Land and is associated primarily with immeasurable light, as well as with boundless life and compassion.

Amitabha represents Sanskrit Amitābha, traditionally analyzed as amita, “immeasurable” or “boundless,” plus ābhā, “light” or “radiance.” The compound therefore means “immeasurable light.” It became the name of the Buddha who presides over the Western Pure Land in Mahayana Buddhism. Chinese translations and transcriptions transmitted the name throughout East Asia, and the shortened transcription reached Japanese as Amida, the familiar name in Amida Buddha.
