アンダマン
解説 Definition
Andaman はインド洋周辺の地名に使われる固有名詞で、アンダマン諸島やアンダマン海などを指します。単独では地域名の一部として使われることが多く、英語では通常大文字で書かれます。
Andaman is a geographical name used chiefly in the Andaman Islands and the Andaman Sea, in the northeastern Indian Ocean. On its own, it usually functions as part of a proper place-name or as a modifier referring to that island region.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Andaman は単独の普通名詞より、the Andaman Islands「アンダマン諸島」や the Andaman Sea「アンダマン海」の一部として覚える。地名なので大文字で書き、地図上ではベンガル湾の東側を思い浮かべる。語源は確定していないため、Hanumanとの関連は有力説として覚え、断定しない。
Learn Andaman through its two most common geographical combinations: the Andaman Islands and the Andaman Sea. On a map, place them east of the Bay of Bengal in the northeastern Indian Ocean. This location-based image is more useful than treating Andaman as an ordinary countable noun. Always capitalize it as part of a proper name. A frequently proposed origin connects the name with a Malay form of Hanuman, but because the history is uncertain, remember this as a theory rather than as a proven word equation.

andaman の語源・成り立ち Etymology
語源は諸説あり、マレー語のHanduman(ヒンドゥー神ハヌマーンの変形)に由来するとされる。サンスクリット語hanumant(顎を持つ者)が原義。アラブ商人がこの島々をAndamanと記録し定着した。インド洋の島嶼群を指す地名。
The origin of Andaman is uncertain. A widely repeated explanation derives it from Handuman, a Malay form of Hanuman, the name of the Hindu deity. Hanuman ultimately reflects Sanskrit Hanumant, traditionally interpreted in connection with a prominent jaw. Forms resembling Andaman appeared in accounts by medieval travelers and traders and gradually became established in European geographical usage for the islands and the surrounding sea.
