scorch は古フランス語 escorchier、さらに俗ラテン語 excorticare にさかのぼり、ex-「外へ」+ cortic-「樹皮・皮」を含みます。もとは「皮をはぐほど焼く」で、そこから「ひりつくほど痛烈に攻撃する」へ拡張しました。cortex, cortical が近縁です。
