解説 Definition
ムカデは多くの脚を持つ節足動物で、通常は細長い身体をしています。主に夜行性で、湿って暗い場所を好み、小さな昆虫やクモを補食します。多くの文化圏では、この生き物に対して恐怖心や嫌悪感を抱く人が少なくありません。
A centipede is a long, thin animal with many legs and a body made of many small sections. It usually lives in dark, damp places such as under rocks or in soil. Although it has many legs, the exact number can vary.

pedestrian（歩行者）や pedal（ペダル）の ped を見て「足のあるもの」と結びつけると、centipede は“足が目立つ虫”として覚えやすい。見た目は long, many-legged のセットで固定すると強い。似た虫の millipede と混同しやすいので、centipede は動きが速く、平たく、一本ずつ脚が横に張り出すイメージ、millipede はより丸くてゆっくり、という対比で整理すると記憶に残る。

centipede はラテン語 centi-「百」と ped-/pes「足」からできた語で、文字通りは「百本足のもの」です。実際に百本とは限りませんが、多数の足をもつ虫を見た古人の名づけがそのまま残りました。関連語は century, pedestrian。
