解説 Definition
彩度は、色の鮮やかさや純粋さの度合いを表す用語です。高い彩度の色はより鮮やかで、低い彩度の色はより灰色っぽく見えます。
Chroma means the strength or purity of a color. A color with high chroma looks rich and vivid, while low chroma colors look duller or more gray. This word is often used in art, design, and color theory.

mono+chrome（単色）や chromatic（色の）を知っていると、chrom- が「色」に関わる語幹だとつながる。chroma はその中でも『何色か』ではなく『どれだけ鮮やかか・灰色っぽくないか』に注目する語。vivid なら高く、muted / grayish なら低いと結びつけると定着しやすい。hue（色相）や brightness/lightness（明るさ）とは別軸で、画像編集では saturation に近い話として出やすい。monochrome と混同しないこと。

ギリシャ語 chroma「色」がそのまま語源で、さらに khrōs「肌・表面」にさかのぼります。monochrome や chromosome と同根なので、chroma が示す彩度は“色の強さ”というより、表面に現れる色味そのものの濃さだと見えてきます。
