hue は古英語 hiw / hiew「見た目、姿、色」に由来するゲルマン系の語。もとは外見全体を指し、そこから「色合い」という意味に絞られた。見え方の違いが色の違いとして意識されたと分かり、関連語に hued, hueless がある。
"Hue" comes from Old English hiw or hiew, a Germanic word meaning "appearance," "form," or "color." At first it could refer to outward look more generally. Over time, the meaning narrowed to the special sense of a shade or color.
