音楽理論では、主要な調の音階の間にあるすべての半音を含む進行や和声を指す形容詞です。ピッチを半音ずつ移動させることで緊張感や色彩感を出す場合に使われます。また、色彩に関してはスペクトル全体あるいは豊かな色彩の組み合わせを示す表現としても用いられます。
