イタリア語 archipelago を経て、中世ギリシャ語 arkhipelagos にさかのぼり、archi-「 প্রধানな」＋pelagos「海」から成ります。もとは「エーゲ海」の名でしたが、島の多い海から「列島」の意味へ広がりました。関連語に pelagic, archbishop があります。
Archipelago came into English through Italian from Medieval Greek arkhipelagos, made from archi- "chief, main" and pelagos "sea." It was first the name of the Aegean Sea, an area full of islands. Because of that setting, the word later came to mean a sea with many islands, and then a group of islands itself.
