受けた恩や好意に感謝せず、恩を忘れた態度をとることを表す形容詞。他者からの助けや配慮に対して当然のように振る舞い、感謝の気持ちを示さない人を批判的に描写する際に使われる。道徳的に否定的な意味合いを持つ言葉である。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
grateful（感謝している）が分かれば、先頭の un- で意味を反転させて「感謝しない人・恩をありがたく思わない」と捉えると覚えやすいです。単なる thankful ではない、より批判的で、好意や助けを当然視する感じが強め。an ungrateful child, Don’t be ungrateful. のように人の態度を責める場面でよく出ます。似た形の thankless は「感謝されにくい」で、人そのものを言う ungrateful とは別です。
Start from `grateful`, then add `un-` to reverse it. That gives the idea of someone who does not show thanks even after help or kindness. Compare it with `thankless`, which usually describes a situation or job, not a person's attitude.
