Animism is the belief that spirits or living force exist in natural things such as animals, plants, rivers, or rocks. It is often used in discussions of religion, culture, and traditional belief systems. The word describes a way of seeing nature as spiritually alive.

animism はラテン語 anima「息・魂」を土台に、思想名詞の -ism が付いた語。animate や animal と同じ anima をもち、「生きものを動かす息」が万物にも宿ると考える発想が、そのままアニミズムの意味になる。
Animism is formed from Latin anima, meaning "breath" or "soul," plus the suffix -ism for a belief system. The same root appears in animate and animal. The basic idea is that the life-giving spirit in living things was extended to nature and objects as well.
