ラテン語 anima（息・魂・生命力）から。印欧祖語 *h₂enh₁-（呼吸する）に由来し、「息をすること＝生きていること」という古代の生命観を反映。関連語 animal（魂を持つもの→動物）、animate（命を吹き込む）。ユング心理学では男性の中の女性的側面を指す用語としても有名。
