解説 Definition
animation は、絵や画像を動いて見えるようにした「アニメーション」という意味です。日本語の「アニメ」は作品ジャンルを指すことが多いですが、英語の animation は動きを作る技術や映像表現全般にも使います。

animation はフランス語 animation を経て、ラテン語 animatio に由来し、さらに animare「息を吹き込み生命を与える」へさかのぼります。語根 anima は「息・魂」で、動く絵に命を吹き込む感覚がそのまま意味に残ります。関連語は animate, animal。
Animation came into English through French and derives from Latin animatio, related to animare, “to give life to” or “enliven.” Animare is based on anima, meaning “breath, life, or soul.” The word first referred broadly to giving life, energy, or liveliness to something. Its modern visual-media sense developed from the idea of making otherwise still drawings, models, or images appear to move as if alive.
