asci は菌類学の ascus の複数形で、語源はギリシャ語 askos「袋・革袋」、そこから新ラテン語 ascus を経た。ascospore や ascocarp も同根で、「胞子を入れる袋」がそのまま子嚢を表すと知ると、形から名づけられた語だと分かる。
