Extragalactic means coming from, existing in, or happening outside our own galaxy, the Milky Way. It is mainly used in astronomy when talking about stars, gas, signals, or objects in other galaxies. The word is technical and usually appears in scientific contexts.

extragalactic はラテン語 extra-「外側の」と、ギリシャ語 gala 由来の galactic「銀河の」から成る語です。galaxy や galactose と同根で、もともと「天の川の外」という発想なので、「銀河系外の」という壮大な意味になります。
Extragalactic is built from extra- "outside" and galactic, which comes from Greek gala, meaning "milk." That Greek root also appears in galaxy and galactose, because the Milky Way was named from its milky appearance. The word therefore developed with the sense of "outside the galaxy," especially beyond our own Milky Way.
