ギリシャ語 galaxias（乳の）から。語根 gala（乳）に由来し、天の川が乳白色の帯に見えたことから「乳の環」の意。関連語: lactose（乳糖、ラテン語 lac も「乳」）。日本語の「銀河」も同様に天の川の色から名づけられた。
From Greek galaxias, meaning "milky," based on gala meaning "milk." It was used for the Milky Way because it looked like a white band of milk across the sky. Later, English used galaxy for large systems of stars, not only the Milky Way. A related word is lactose, from another old root meaning "milk."
