覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
asphyxiated は、まず asphyxia(窒息)や asphyxiate(窒息させる)との語族でまとめて覚えると定着しやすいです。-ed が付いて「窒息した状態になった」と見れば形も意味もつながります。be asphyxiated by smoke / gas のように、煙・ガス・酸欠の場面とセットで記憶すると強いです。似た suffocated もありますが、asphyxiated はより医学的・客観的に“酸素不足で窒息した”感じが出ます。
Learn it with its word family: `asphyxia`, `asphyxiate`, `asphyxiated`. The `-ed` ending helps you see it as a state after something happened. It is often used with smoke, gas, or lack of oxygen, and sounds more medical than `suffocated`.

asphyxiated の語源・成り立ち Etymology
asphyxiated は asphyxiate に -ed が付いた形です。asphyxiate はギリシャ語 a-『ない』+sphyzein『脈打つ』由来の asphyxia を経た語で、asphyxia も同系。原義の『脈がないほど息絶えた状態』が『窒息した』に直結します。
Asphyxiated is the -ed form of asphyxiate. That verb came through asphyxia, from Greek a- meaning "without" and sphyzein meaning "to throb" or "beat." The original idea was a state with no pulse, and it later narrowed to the modern sense of being deprived of air. Asphyxia is a close related word.
