A baseboard is a long wooden or plastic board fixed along the bottom of an inside wall where it meets the floor. It protects the wall and gives the room a finished look.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
base + board で「土台側にある板」と切ると覚えやすい。board は board game の board と同じく平たい板。部屋を思い浮かべ、壁のいちばん下をぐるっと走る細長い板を映像で固定する。floor そのものではなく、壁の根元に付くのがポイント。DIY や内装では install / paint / replace baseboards の形で出やすい。heater や shelf ではなく、壁と床の境目を隠して守る内装パーツだとセットで覚えると忘れにくい。

baseboard は base「土台」と board「板」の複合語で、base はラテン語 basis、さらにギリシャ語 basis「台座」に由来します。壁のいちばん下の土台部分に付く板だと分かると、幅木の位置と役割が語の形そのままに見えます。関連語に basis, basement。
