aboutは古英語onbūtan（周りに）から。a-（～に）+bout（外側、古英語būtan）に分解できる。関連語：bout（一勝負）、but（しかし、元は「外に」の意）。「～の周辺にいる→まさにしようとしている」と近接の意味が発展し、be about to doで「今にも～する」となった。
"About" comes from Old English "onbutan," meaning "around" or "on the outside of." Its earliest sense was physical closeness around something. From that idea of nearness, "be about to do" developed the meaning of being very near to an action in time, almost at the point of doing it. Related words include the old element seen in "but," which once had the sense of "outside."
