Beaujolais はフランス語で Beaujeu という地名に地方・形容詞語尾 -ais が付いた語で、「ボージュー地方のもの」が原義です。Beaujeu や女性形 Beaujolaise も同根で、ワイン名というより本来は土地の名がそのまま味の名前になった語だと見えてきます。
Beaujolais is French and originally meant "from the Beaujeu region." It was formed from the place name Beaujeu with the regional ending -ais. Over time, the name of the area became the name of the wine made there, so the land name turned into a product name.
