ベンチマーク

解説 Definition

benchmarking は、他社や基準と比べて性能や成果を評価することを意味します。日本語の「ベンチマーク」は基準や測定値そのものを指すこともありますが、英語の benchmarking は比較・測定する活動を指すことが多いです。

Benchmarking is the systematic activity of measuring and comparing an organization’s products, services, or performance against competitors, industry standards, or established best practices in order to identify strengths and areas for improvement.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

benchmark は測量の「基準点」から発達した語で、benchmarking はその基準に照らして比較・評価する活動です。benchmark+-ing と捉え、「競合他社と比較する」「業界標準に照らす」「現状の性能を測る」という典型場面を一緒に覚えると、基準値そのものとの違いも明確になります。

Connect benchmarking with its base word benchmark, originally a fixed reference point used in surveying. A benchmark is the standard or point of comparison; benchmarking is the activity of measuring something against that standard. Picture a company comparing its delivery times with the industry average or examining a competitor’s customer service. Common patterns include benchmarking performance, benchmarking against competitors, and industry benchmarking. This helps distinguish the process from a benchmark, which can mean the standard or measurement itself.

benchmarking の語源・成り立ち Etymology

benchmarking は bench + mark + -ing。もとは測量で高さ比較の基準点を表す benchmark からで、bench は古英語、mark は古英語 mearc 由来です。関連語は mark, marker で、「基準の印に照らして比べる」から今の意味になりました。

Benchmarking is formed from benchmark plus the noun-forming -ing. Benchmark originally referred to a surveyor’s mark made on a stable support and used as a reference for measuring elevation. Bench comes from Old English benc, while mark is related to Old English mearc. The word benchmark later developed the broader sense of a standard for comparison, and benchmarking consequently came to denote the process of comparing performance with such a standard.
