ボレロ
解説 Definition
bolero は、スペインやラテンアメリカに関係する舞曲、音楽形式、または短い上着を指す名詞です。日本語の「ボレロ」も同じ語から来ていますが、文脈によって音楽・踊り・衣服のどれを指すかが変わります。
A bolero is a type of Spanish dance and its accompanying music, or a related Latin American song form. The same noun can also mean a short, open-front jacket worn over other clothing, especially a dress.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
bolero は一語で「舞曲・踊り」と「丈の短い上着」を表すため、文脈語で判別します。perform a bolero や dancers practiced the bolero なら音楽・舞踊、wear a bolero over a dress なら衣服です。いずれもスペイン語由来で、日本語の「ボレロ」と形も意味も近いものの、ラテンアメリカ音楽の bolero など様式の違いにも注意します。
Remember bolero through two contrasting scenes. In a concert hall, an orchestra performs a bolero or dancers practice the bolero; here the word names music or dance. In a clothing shop, someone wears a bolero over a dress; here it means a short jacket. The nearby verbs usually reveal the sense: perform, play, and dance suggest music, while wear, black, and over a dress suggest clothing. The word is Spanish in origin, but do not assume every musical bolero is identical: Spanish dance traditions and the later Latin American song genre have different musical characteristics.

bolero の語源・成り立ち Etymology
スペイン語boleroで、bola(球)に由来するとされる。18世紀末スペインで生まれた3拍子の舞曲、またはその踊り手が着た丈の短い上着を指す。ラヴェルの管弦楽曲で世界的に知られる。関連語はball(舞踏会)。
English borrowed bolero from Spanish. By the late eighteenth century, the Spanish word denoted a dance and its music, and it could also refer to a performer of that dance. The clothing sense developed for a short jacket associated with Spanish dress and dance costume. A derivation involving Spanish bola, “ball,” has been proposed, but the deeper formation is not fully certain, so the secure history begins with the Spanish musical and dance term.
