The element was named in the early nineteenth century from Latin cadmia and Greek kadmeia, terms associated with calamine or zinc-bearing mineral material. Cadmium was identified while zinc compounds were being examined, which explains the mineral connection. Its name uses the ending -ium, common in the English names of metallic elements. The historically related mineral term calamine developed through a different linguistic path and should not be treated as a simple derivative of cadmium.
