大型のエイの一種で、翼のような広いひれを羽ばたかせながら海中を優雅に泳ぎ回る生き物です。身体は扁平で、温暖な海の表層に多く生息し、細かなプランクトンを濾し取りながら移動します。別名マンタレイとも呼ばれています。

manta はスペイン語で「毛布・外套」を意味する manta から英語に入った語で、さらに後期ラテン語 mantum、ラテン語 mantellum にさかのぼる。平たく大きく広がる姿が毛布のように見えたため魚名になった。関連語は mantle。
Manta came from Spanish manta, meaning "blanket" or "cloak," and goes back to Late Latin mantum and Latin mantellum. It is related to English mantle. The name was given to the sea animal because its large, flat shape looked like a spread-out blanket.
