campana
鐘形飾り
解説 Definition
建築用語で、円柱の上部に付く鐘の形をした装飾的な部分。コリント様式建築の特徴。
In architecture, a campana is the bell-shaped main body or core of certain column capitals, especially Corinthian capitals, around which carved foliage and other ornament are arranged. The term may also describe a bell-shaped decorative architectural form.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
campana はラテン語・イタリア語の「鐘」と結び付け、円柱上部にある鐘形の部分を思い描く。建築では bell-shaped campana や ornate campana と使われ、柱頭全体を指す capital より限定的。複数形は例文のように英語式の campanas が用いられる。
Connect campana with a bell: its basic shape widens like the mouth of a bell. On a Corinthian column, picture this bell-shaped core beneath and among the carved acanthus leaves. Useful combinations are an ornate campana, a bell-shaped campana, and the campana of a capital. Do not treat it as a synonym for the whole capital; it more specifically names the bell-shaped body or a comparable decorative form. In ordinary English plural contexts, campanas is possible.

campana の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 campana(鐘)に由来し、イタリアのカンパニア地方が良質な青銅の鐘の産地だったことから地名が普通名詞化した。関連語に campanile(鐘楼)や campaign(野戦→運動)がある。「鐘の鳴る土地」が原義。
Campana is borrowed from Latin campana, “bell,” a word also continued in Italian and other Romance languages. The Latin noun has traditionally been associated with Campania in Italy, although the precise history of that association is not fully certain. The same bell-related base appears in campanile, “bell tower,” and campanology, “the study of bells.” Despite the similar spelling, campaign has a separate historical development through words for open country or a battlefield.
