canister はラテン語 canistrum「籠」に由来し、その奥にギリシャ語 kanastron「編んだ籠」があります。明確な接頭辞より canistr- という語幹が核で、canasta も同系なので、もとは金属缶ではなく「物を入れて運ぶ容器」全般だったと分かります。
Canister comes from Latin canistrum, meaning "basket," which itself came from Greek kanastron, "wicker basket." The word first referred more generally to a container for carrying or holding things, not only to a metal tube or tin. Its history shows the idea moving from a woven basket to many kinds of containers.
