tea caddy の caddy は、マレー語 kati「カティ（重さの単位）」に由来するとされます。かつて茶を量って売買・保管した単位名が、茶葉を入れる容器の名に移った語です。つまりこの語義では「手伝いの人」ではなく、茶葉を量ってしまう入れ物という流れで「茶筒」につながります。
