onboardingはon boardの動名詞化で、boardは古英語bord「板・船べり」に由来します。もとは「船に乗せる」イメージなので、新人を組織に迎え入れることをonboardingと言うと、ただ説明するのでなく「同じ船に乗せる」感じが見えてきます。aboardやboardingが同系です。
