borscht の語源・成り立ち Etymology
英語borschtはイディッシュ語borshtを経て、ウクライナ語・ロシア語борщに由来します。ポーランド語barszczも同系で、もとは材料だったハナウド類を指す語でした。『その植物の汁物』が、今のボルシチへ発展した語です。
Borscht entered English through Yiddish borsht, from Ukrainian and Russian borshch. Polish barszcz is from the same family. At first the word referred to a kind of hogweed plant used in the soup. Over time, it shifted from the plant itself to the soup made from it.
