redaction はフランス語 rédaction を経て、ラテン語 redigere「まとめて整える」に由来します。re-「戻して」+ agere「動かす・進める」の形で、act や agent も同じ語根です。もとは文を整える「編集」ですが、現代では公開前に機密部分を整えて伏せる処理、つまり「黒塗り・削除」にも発展しました。
Redaction came into English from French redaction, from Latin redigere, meaning "to bring together" or "arrange." It is built from re- and agere "to drive, do, or act," the same root behind act and agent. The sense moved from gathering material into order to the work of editing or preparing a text.
