capybara はポルトガル語 capivara を経て、トゥピ語 ka'apiuara『草を食べるもの』に由来する。ka'a（草）と行為者要素から成る語で、同根に capivara や綴り違い capibara があり、名づけ自体がこの動物の食性をそのまま表している。
Capybara came into English through Portuguese capivara, from Tupi ka'apiuara. The word is usually explained as meaning "grass-eater" or "one who eats grass," built from a root for grass plus an agent element. Its history shows that the animal was named directly from its feeding habit, and related forms include capivara and capibara.
