Definition
To change a substance into carbon or a carbon-rich material, usually by heating it. It can also describe making something char and turn black.
Memory Tip
Break carbonize into carbon and -ize, meaning “make or become.” Picture intense heat turning wood or plastic into a black, coal-like material. Unlike burn, this verb focuses on the transformation into carbon-rich matter.
