A casebook is a book that contains a collection of real cases for study and reference. It is commonly used in law and medicine, where students and professionals learn from court cases or patient cases.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
casebook は case + book の形でそのまま覚えるのが近道です。ここでの case は「箱」ではなく、法律なら「判例・訴訟例」、医学なら「症例」、捜査なら「事件」。それらを集めた book なので「判例集・症例集・事件簿」と取れます。law school casebook や medical casebook のように分野名と一緒に見ると意味が安定します。単なる notebook ではなく、個別の case を学習・記録のために並べた本、と切り分けると忘れにくいです。

casebook は case「事例・訴訟例」（古フランス語を経てラテン語 casus「起こったこと」）+ book（古英語 boc）から成ります。文字どおり「case を集めた本」で、法律では判例集、医学では症例集、捜査では事件簿という具体的な記録集を指します。
Casebook is a compound of case and book. Case came into English through Old French from Latin casus, which first meant a "fall" or event and later came to mean an instance or legal matter. The word therefore originally meant a book of cases, especially collected examples such as legal or medical ones.
