A Celt is a member of any of the ancient peoples of Europe who shared related languages and cultural traditions. The term is also used for people identified with surviving Celtic cultures and heritage.

Celt entered English through Latin Celtae, a name for peoples of western Europe, ultimately from Greek Keltoi. Ancient Greek writers used that name for groups living beyond the familiar Mediterranean world. The deeper origin and original literal meaning of Keltoi are uncertain, so interpretations such as “warriors” or “hidden people” should not be treated as established facts. Celtic was later formed as the corresponding adjective.
