centimeter は、長さを表す単位で、センチメートルという意味です。日本語では「センチ」と省略されますが、英語では centimeter と言うのが正式です。

ラテン語のcentum（百）とギリシャ語のmetron（測定）に由来し、接頭辞centi-（百分の一）と接尾辞-meterが結合した造語だ。関連語にcenturyやthermometerがある。語源から「基準となる長さの百分の一」という意味が直感的に納得できる。
